The Character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
What do I mean by this title?! I mean… standing… in humility… before the greatest who ever walked the earth… the greatest of the great… with whom Allah sealed His prophets… Muhammad ﷺ… that most exalted human being…
For all of creation… has levels… and stations… and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ… was given the highest of levels… and the loftiest of stations… as stated in the words of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
﴿عسى أن يبعثك ربك مقامًا محمودًا﴾ “It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqaman Mahmuda (a station of praise and glory).” (Al-Isra’ 17:79)
a station in which the first and the last will praise you… Never in my life have I felt fear… filling me… and awe overwhelming me… as I did while attempting to enter his most sacred sanctuary…
For the affairs of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ… are no easy matter… nor is it simple… to enter into his lights… I kept circling… and grew only in longing… for him… and kept wondering… how I might enter…!! while I am darkness and error… darknesses, one upon another!!
Should I approach him through “the Book of Allah” that was revealed to him?!
Or through his hadiths… recorded by the great Imams of narration and Hadith?
Or through his fragrant biography?
Or through what has been written about him?
The success of my choice… was that I had no choice! I approached him… through all of these together… and as I set out… I felt… with every stage I covered… that Allah the Exalted had graciously given to me… and the help began to flow… and so this book came to be…
How did the sea of the Law… and the sea of the Truth… meet in him?!! The sea of the Law in him… is simple on the surface… and in its depths it extends… and extends… and extends…
And the sea of the Truth in him… is a dazzling light on the surface… yet when you reach it… you find it a fathomless sea… covered by waves… upon waves…
There is no room in this book for fancies… nor for rhetoric… nor for imagination… It is built on authentic texts… beyond any doubt… from books the Muslim nation has agreed to be true…
then rays… spreading from those texts… wherever Allah wills them to spread… then discoveries… from the depths… of things… that lay hidden… in his noble character… a character like no other…
And I call Allah, besides Whom there is no god, to witness… that throughout the experience of writing this book… I witnessed that Muhammad ﷺ… is the Truth… and that he is the Messenger of Allah… in truth… and in sincerity…
I witnessed it with my soul… my heart… my mind… my tongue… and my hand… Whenever some of the rays of his lights were unveiled to me… I came to understand much that I had not known…
and my certainty grew that he was fashioned under the eyes of his Lord… and that although he was a human being like us… he “receives revelation”… and that is the station of prophethood in him…
And whenever I touched something of his radiance… and thought I had grasped something of its secrets… I became certain that I was attempting the impossible… that he is above all minds… and beyond all comprehension!!
The example of Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in this… is like that of the universe… whenever man reaches some of its secrets… and thinks he has come to know the whole universe… he becomes certain once again that what he has learned of its secrets… is but a drop in an ocean!!
And Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will always remain so… and behind him… all those great prophets… You feel their light… yet you do not know how their light is… nor from where it flows to us?!
They are the Messengers of Allah… who convey His messages… and fear Him… and fear none but Allah… And so is Muhammad… in him are secrets… lights… and depths… that none knows but Allah alone.
So let all these volumes be… pointers… that open expressions to the hearts… or sparks… that kindle understanding in the minds… for among the readers there may be… one with deeper understanding… than the authors…
So let all people come forward… and reflect… on the wonders of the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ… for perhaps Allah will open to them of him… what He did not open to me… for he is the Messenger of Allah to them all…
In his character there is sustenance… enough for them all… so let there be no blame on me… if I fall short of encompassing his greatness… for who could ever encompass it?!!
Every believing heart holds… a speck of his light… so let it set it alight… and release it… and from the release of them all… the wonders hidden in this greatest of characters will gather across the horizons…
light upon light… But however deep… this supreme character… and however far… its horizons extend… we must set out on the journey… the most momentous journey… that we may grasp… even a little… of its wonders…
﴿والذين جاهدوا فينا لنهدينهم سبلنا﴾ “As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths.” (Al-‘Ankabut 29:69)
